The MG Rover Group was the final domestically owned mass-production car company in the British automobile industry. In 2000, BMW sold the original Rover Group’s car-making and engine-manufacturing assets to the Phoenix Consortium, becoming the firm. Nanjing Automobile Group purchased MG Rover’s major assets in 2005, and Nanjing restarted MG sports car and sports saloon production in 2007. In the same year, Nanjing amalgamated with SAIC Motor (the largest vehicle manufacturer in China).

During 2009 the UK subsidiary was renamed MG Motor UK. The MG TF was manufactured at the former MG Rover Longbridge plant and sold within the UK from 2008 to 2010. In 2011 the first all new MG for 16 years (the MG 6) was unveiled in the UK (manufactured at the Longbridge facility) (assembled at the Longbridge factory). In 2013, a supermini (the MG 3) was added to the lineup, which helped MG Motor become the UK’s fastest growing car manufacturer in 2014.

The Rover brand, which BMW had kept and leased to MG Rover, was sold to Ford, who had purchased Land Rover from BMW in 2000. Ford sold the rights to the dormant Rover brand, along with the Jaguar Cars and Land Rover businesses, to Tata Motors in 2008.
